Wayne R. Tompkins

Wayne R. Tompkins, 85, of Rock Island, Illinois, died Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island.

There will be a brief gathering from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. The Rev. Dan Qualls will officiate a service at 1:30 p.m. immediately followed by burial at Rock Island National Cemetery, where the American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Assembly of God, Rock Island.

Wayne was born April 14, 1932, in Rock Island, the son of Custer and Bernice (Corwin) Tompkins. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in rural Rock Island before going to work for Servus Rubber. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he went to work for Farmall.

He enjoyed building and working on desks and bookcases, as well as cars.

Wayne is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Charlene and Bruce Lyon of Rock Island, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Dorothy Shehorn, Irva Mae Bealer, and Roger Tompkins.
