Assured of the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, John W. Service, 97, of Moline, Illinois, died on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa, surrounded by his family.
A celebration of John?s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 3, at First Presbyterian Church, East Moline, with The Reverends Becky Sherwood and Tom Gilliland officiating. Burial will be at 9 a.m. Friday, preceding the funeral, at Viola Cemetery, Viola, Illinois. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, East Moline, Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois, or the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa.
John Wilber Service was born May 15, 1911, in Lodi, Wisconsin, the son of Wilber and Margaret (Wherry) Service. The son of a Presbyterian minister, John also lived in Texas, Iowa, Colorado, Nebraska, and Illinois. While John?s father was serving as pastor of the Viola, Illinois, Presbyterian church, John met Evelyn R. Brokaw, who he married on June 7, 1940. They made their home in Moline and Monmouth. John lovingly cared for Evelyn until her death on May 18, 2000.
A graduate of Monmouth College in 1935, John began working for John Deere Spreader Works in East Moline in 1936, assuming the position of sales manager from 1944 to 1969. He served as salary administrator of Deere and Company from 1969 to 1973, when he retired with 37 years of service.
John served as a Trustee of Monmouth College for several decades until he was granted Trustee Emeritus status. In 1956, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from Monmouth College in recognition of the exceptional achievements in his career, his leadership qualities, and his involvement in civic and charitable endeavors.
On September 6, 2003, John married Florence J. Angus McCaulley in Moline. Together, John and Florence enjoyed traveling the country as well as to Ireland to visit family and friends, entertaining, and maintaining an active church life. John was a member of First Presbyterian Church, East Moline, where he served on the Session, Trustees, and the Finance Commission. He worked with the United Presbyterian Men in leadership roles and taught Sunday school at several Presbyterian churches over his lifetime. John was also an active member of East Moline Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International.
John served as a role model to all who knew him and has had a lasting influence on countless lives. He will be remembered for the special interest he took in everyone he met and for his easy smile.
John stayed young by exercising, golfing, following current affairs, reading the Wall Street Journal daily and using the internet to keep in touch with family and friends.
John?s greatest pride was reserved for his family. Among his survivors whose lives have been richly blessed by John are his wife, Florence, of Moline; his daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Joe Culbert of Guntersville, Alabama; his sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Karen Service of Moline, Kent and Lynn Service of Bettendorf, Allen McCaulley and Linnea Thompson of Moline, Dr, Mark and Marilyn McCaulley of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and Brian and Kathy McCaulley of Moline; his granddaughters and their husbands, Allison and Mike McCutcheon, Carrie Jackson, Stephanie Service, Katelyn Service, Megan and Rowdy Frederiksen; his grandsons and their wives, Scott and Jenae Service, Jody Culbert, Grant and Laura McCaulley, Collin McCaulley, and Evan McCaulley; four great-grandchildren, Grace and Gabrielle McCutcheon, Caroline Service, and Luke McCaulley; and his sister, Ruby Gilliland of Maryville, Tennessee. John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn, and his sister, Lucille Fisher.
