The former Virginia Marie Riley was born September 25, 1921, in Rockford, Illinois, the daughter of William Frederick and Hazel Hovlund Riley. She graduated from Rock Island High School and married Ralph G. Carmichael on April 4, 1942, in Davenport. He died December 25, 2006.
Her burial on the Rock Island Arsenal, along with her father, mother, brother, and husband, brings her life to a complete circle. She lived on the island from 1924 to 1941, while her father was in charge of the Rock Island Arsenal Commissary. She met her husband on the island when she was 16, and he was 21 and working for the Civilian Conservation Corps. She later worked as a clerk-typist at the Arsenal. Her life on Arsenal Island was profiled in the recent Daily Dispatch, Rock Island Argus, and Quad City Times tribute to the 150th anniversary of the Arsenal entitled ?In Defense of America.?
She was an excellent housekeeper, which she credited to her Norwegian upbringing, as well as an excellent cook and baker, and enjoyed traveling.
Virginia is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Michael McPeters of Davenport. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant brother, Kenneth Riley.
