Moline, Illinois Dr. Thomas William Carter, 73, Moline general surgeon, passed away at his home on Tuesday, June 5, 2001. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline, at 9:15 AM Saturday. The Reverend Robert E. Lee will officiate. Burial is in Riverside Cemetery, Moline. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to Seton Middle School Fund, Moline, or a favorite charity. Dr. Carter was born February 23, 1928, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Thomas William and Nannette (Geer) Carter. He was a student at St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa, and received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Illinois in 1949, and his medical degree, cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago, in 1951. He married Barbara Lee Murchie on June 23, 1951, in Moline. His internship and surgical residency were at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. He practiced medicine, specializing in surgery, from 1958 to 2000, with staff privileges at all of the Illinois Quad City hospitals, maintaining his office in the Fifth Avenue Building, Moline, those 42 years. He served from First Lieutenant to Captain in the United States Air Force at Orlando Air Force Base, Florida, was a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgery, and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Fraternity. In 1972, he was appointed Trauma Medical Director at the first designated Areawide Trauma Center, that being at the former Moline Public Hospital, where he later served as president of the medical-dental staff from 1974 to 1976. In addition to his wife of almost 50 years, he is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Carter Deveau and Todd Deveau of Atlanta, Georgia, and Dr. Catherine Carter Goebel and Dr. Gary James Goebel of Moline, and grandchildren, Todd Carter Deveau and Patrick Fletcher Deveau of Atlanta, and Thomas James Goebel and Katherine Elizabeth Goebel of Moline.
