Richard E. Head, Sr., 91, of Moline, Illinois, died Friday, January 6, 2012, in Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Services are 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with The Reverend A. Parker Lewis III officiating. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where the Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hope United Church of Christ, Moline, or the Moline VFW Post #2153.
Richard Elden Head was born September 11, 1920, in Aurora, Illinois, the son of Ross E. and Evelyn (Paulzine) Head. He married Bernice Coble. She died in 1992.
Richard worked for the Rock Island Arsenal before serving in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he owned and operated Southpark Bakery in Rock Island. He later worked for Edwards Bakery, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of Hope United Church of Christ, Moline, a 67-year member of the Moline VFW Post #2153, and volunteered at the Senior Citizens Center in Rock Island. He enjoyed painting, making jewelry, carving, and fishing.
Richard is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard, Jr. and Phebe Head of Moline; grandchildren and their spouses, James and Weng Sharp of San Diego, California, Kathy Herman of Moline, Tom and Tracy Sharp of Silvis, Illinois, Rory Ramsey of Colona, Illinois, Jacinda Head of Moline, Sandy and Dan Atkins of East Moline, Illinois, and Linda Lopez of Moline; 15 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Henry Sharp of Silvis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; a daughter, Karen Sharp; a granddaughter, Sonya Head; a grandson and his wife, James and Mandy Sharp; and two sisters.
