Joseph ?J.C.? Turner, 89, of Moline, formerly of Rock Island, died Sunday, January 8, 2012, at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport, Iowa.
Services are 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Moline, with The Reverend Dr. Flint Miller officiating. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where the Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Memorials may be made to the Moline First Baptist Church.
Joseph Clyde Turner was born July 30, 1922, in Ozark, Alabama, the son of Samuel David and Luna Verl Smith Turner. He attended Dale County High School, Ozark. He married Marjory Olive Coppenbarger on January 26, 1944, in Ozark. They had been married for 63 years when she died November 10, 2007.
Joe proudly served from 1940?1946 in the United States Navy during WWII. He was stationed primarily in Washington, D.C., San Diego, CA, and the Admiralty Islands, South Pacific. He and Marjory settled in Decatur, IL to begin raising their family, where he worked at the Decatur Signal Depot and Meadow Gold Dairy and attended Millikin University in the evenings. After a move to the Quad Cities, he worked in supervisory positions as a forklift operator at the Rock Island Arsenal until retirement in 1978.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Moline, American Legion Post #246, National Association of Retired Federal Workers Blackhawk Chapter 338, St. Louis Cardinals Fan Club, and the Senior Mixed ?Alley Cats? Bowling League.
A devoted family man with an abundant love of people, Joe lived life to its fullest and has provided a lasting legacy for his large loving family and his many friends. He loved bowling, golfing, politics, traveling, dancing, cooking, the St. Louis Cardinals, old movies, and music. He generously supported his church and many charities. He was famous for his irrepressible sense of humor and for making lasting friends with everyone he met.
J.C. is survived by four daughters, Kellun Turner (Mike Boggess), Denver, Colorado, Nancy Slattery (Jim, deceased November 2006), Bloomington, Illinois, Dr. Kathy Novota (David Mejia), Louisville, Kentucky, Ellen Ryan (Pat), Davenport, Iowa; and one son Dr. Wes Turner (Lisa), Eagle River, Alaska; fourteen grandchildren, Summer, Sierra, and Allegra Boggess, Jamie Winchell, Greg Myers, Heidi Fletcher, Heather Curry, Margo, Ariel, and Danny Mejia, Aubrey Ryan (Schiltz) and Galen Ryan, Xinghua and Jiale Turner; eight great-grandchildren, Maxen and Orrin Winchell, Nathan Novota, Maya and Ava Curry, Colby Fletcher, Caleb Micho, and Arlo Schiltz; two brothers, Tom (Virginia) Turner and O.V. Turner; and many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one son-in-law, and brothers and sisters, Bob, Buell, Willie, Adel, Paul, Blaun, Adeline, Ray, Doris, Mack, Buddy, and Boyd.
