Sandy Witzel

Sandy Witzel, 69, of Moline, Illinois, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2023, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Rock Island.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley, with Father Tony Ego officiating.  A prayer service will begin at 4:30 p.m. Monday, September 18, at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, immediately followed by visitation until 7:00 p.m.  Private burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Sandy’s memory to “Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa in honor of Abby Scott”.

The former Sandra Theresa Bender was born November 22, 1953, in Moline, the daughter of Edwin Joseph and Marie Evelyn (Dreifurst) Bender.  She married the love of her life, Dale Witzel, on September 15, 1979, in Coal Valley. 

She worked for American Air Filter before beginning her career in retail/management.  She worked over 30 years for Hallmark, as well as Book Emporium and Venture in Moline.  She was an active member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, and enjoyed bowling, gardening and shopping.  Above all else, family was the most important thing to Sandy.

Sandy is survived by her beloved husband, Dale; her daughter and son-in-law, Susanne and Jon Cornmesser of Moline; two grandsons, Dade and Drayk Cornmesser; siblings, Terry (Sandy) Bender of Milan, Dale Bender of Atlanta, Illinois, Mary Lou (Joe Herman) Kennedy of East Moline, Jodi (Bill) D’Hondt of Coal Valley, Nancy Corelis of Coal Valley, and Barb (Doug) Scott of Davenport; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters-in-law, Deanna Bender and Lynda Bender; a niece, Abby Scott; and in-laws, Lester Dean and Ruth Ann Witzel.
