Ruth L. Cheek

Ruth L. Cheek, 95, formerly of Rock Island, Illinois, died Saturday, October 15, 2022, in Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa.

Services are 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 24, at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial is in Rock Island Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Ruth Lorraine VanZandbergen was born June 26, 1927, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, to Wilford and Helen (Spah) VanZandbergen. She married Wesley Cheek in 1946, and the couple had three children (Mark, Candace and Lisa) prior to separating.

Ruth owned and operated “Sundial East” hair salon in Moline for many years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Island.

She enjoyed crafts, cross-stitch, knitting, reading, and jigsaw puzzles. She also enjoyed sports, especially the Cubs, Packers, Bears, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Wisconsin Badgers. She faithfully sent birthday and anniversary cards to family and friends.

Ruth was hardworking, brave, and an independent woman before it was fashionable.

She is survived by two daughters, Candy (Mike) Walters of Bettendorf, and Lisa (Roger) Ockenfels of Oxford Junction, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Nadine Cheek of Florida; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Damian) Girten, Mark (Mandy) Cheek II, Terry (Liz) Walters, Nick (Autumn) Walters, Kelsey (Chad) Jones, Amanda (Derek) Newton, and Lindsay (Danny) Payne; 21 great-grandchildren, Connor, Bryson, Bennett, Alec, Jenna, Jameson, Julia, Emily, Weston, Brooke, Reid, Jackson, Halana, Clayton, Carter, Carsen, Chayse, Crosby, Greysek, Braxton, and Cora; sister-in-law, Evelyn VanZandbergen of Davenport; and six nieces and nephews, and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Mark Cheek; brother, Donald VanZandbergen; son-in-law, Dennis Stegall; and longtime companion, Richard Winger.
