Aledo, Illinois Funeral Services for Roy A. Staggs, 96, well known educator of Aledo, formerly of Alexis, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at College Avenue Presbyterian Church, Aledo. Burial will be in Aledo Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at Trimble Funeral Home, Aledo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the College Avenue Presbyterian Church or the Mercer County Senior Citizens Center. Roy died on Saturday, June 1, 2002 at the Mercer County Hospital, Aledo. Roy was born on October 10, 1905 in Shelby County, Missouri to John Thomas and Minnie Pearl (Applegate) Staggs. He married Ann Margaret Ellsworth on March 26, 1932 in Shelbyville, Missouri. She preceded him in death on July 20, 1988. He married Florence Ann Hart on April 14, 1990 in North Henderson, Illinois. Roy was a 1920 graduate of Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, and he received his Masters in Education at the University of Illinois in 1942. Roy devoted his life to teaching serving various districts including: Principal and Teacher at Roosevelt Military Academy in Aledo from 1966 until his retirement in 1972; Superintendent of Schools, Atlanta, Illinois, District; Alexis High School Principal from 1950 to 1961; Superintendent of Schools in Nauvoo, Illinois, from 1946 to 1950; Superintendent of Schools in Elvaston, Illinois, from 1945 to 1946; Teacher and coach at Clifton, Illinois, from 1940 to 1945 and Teacher and coach at Sherrard High School from 1928 to 1940. Roy was a member of the College Avenue Presbyterian Church and various organizations including: Past Board Member of the Aledo Kiwanis Club; Charter Member of the Mercer County Senior Citizens Center; Charter President of the Alexis Lions Club; Organizer of the Aledo Chapter of AARP; Organizer of Meals-on-Wheels program in Aledo; Past Scout Master of Sherrard Boy Scouts of America; Mercer Township Clerk from 1974 to 1985; Member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association and a former member of the National Education Association. Roy is survived by his wife, Florence; a son and daughter-in-law; Thomas and Anna Staggs of Lansing, Illinois; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and a sister, Bertha Jane Hollenbeck of Shelbyville, Missouri. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann; 2 sons, Richard and Roy W. "Bill" Staggs; 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
