Richard A. ?Cowboy? McCord, 70, passed away quietly on Sunday, December 21, 2008, in Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, after an extended illness.
As requested by Richard, the body will be cremated. Interment will be in his home state of Michigan. There will be a private memorial service at a later date. Memorials may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, the American Lung Association, the American Kidney Foundation, or the American Heart Association. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is entrusted with arrangements.
Richard was born February 28, 1938, in Pontiac, Michigan, to Charles R. and Gertrude I. (Oberbach) McCord. He moved to the Quad Cities in 1957, a year after graduating from high school, and was employed by International Harvester, East Moline, and Star Forms, Bettendorf, and joined Alcoa Aluminum Davenport Works, Riverdale, Iowa, in 1965. He retired from Alcoa on March 31, 2000, as an overhead crane operator in the Ingot Plant after 35 years of service. He enjoyed his work and was considered a valuable employee.
Among Richard?s many interests were traveling across the United States, reading, antique cars, and model cars. He had an extensive collection of music CD?s and movie videos and enjoyed a wide-range of both. Feeding birds around his home became am important project for him for several years, and while he had no pets, he loved dogs and horses. Richard was very loyal and generous to both his family as well as his friends. He also was very active in numerous charitable organizations, both locally and nationally. You could always find Richard in a crowd by his signature ?cowboy hat? that was always a part of his attire.
Richard is survived by his brother, Robert C. McCord of Romulus, Michigan; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elaine G. and Lon Nanke of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Ruth R. Porter of Encino, California, Rosemary L. and Wayne Perkins of Moline, Illinois, and Mary M. Weirts of Mesick, Michigan; fifteen nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Jerry W. Pearce of Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister-in-law, Dona L. McCord, and brothers-in-law, Larry D. Porter and William (Bill) Weirts.
