Richard J. DeDobbelaere, 80, of Moline, Illinois, and Mesa, Arizona, died Friday, December 2, 2005, in Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island, Illinois.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Burial is in National Cemetery on the Rock Island Arsenal, where Moline American Legion Post #246, will present military honors. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home where Clement Lodge #680, AF & AM, Colona, will conduct Masonic funeral services at 3 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to Shriner's Children?s Hospitals or Disabled American Veterans.
Richard John DeDobbelaere was born August 9, 1925, in Rock Island, the son of Maurice and Lucille (Sutterman) DeDobbelaere. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1943 and joined the U. S. Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Pennsylvania, and received the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained in the first battle against the Japanese at Makin Island in the Pacific. He recovered and continued serving the Navy until his discharge in 1945. He married Donna Webber on January 10, 1946, in Rock Island. She died February 6, 1994. He married Clara Sprague Page on October 30, 1996, in Maui, Hawaii.
He worked in machine maintenance at John Deere Plow/Planter Works for 21 years, retiring in 1988. He previously worked for the former Economy Motors in Rock Island for 20 years. He was a member of American Legion Post #246, Moline; Clement Lodge #680, AF & AM, Colona; and Rose Chapter #626, Order of Eastern Star, Silvis; and had belonged to Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline. He enjoyed fishing and the Chicago Bears.
Dick is survived by his wife, Clara; a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Gary Carlson of Colona; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and JoAnn DeDobbelaere of Orion, Illinois; five grandchildren and spouses, Wendy and Duane Baker of Silvis, Illinois, Gayla and John Scott III of Moline, Becki and Rob Burke of Davenport, Iowa, Aaron DeDobbelaere of Dekalb, Illinois, and Sean and Cheri Baumgartner of Chicago; three great-grandchildren, Craig Baker, Brynn Burke, and Leila Baumgartner; seven step-children and their spouses, Cynthia and Richard Hunt of Gorham, Maine, Dennis Page, Holly and Andrew Roy, George Jr. and Kathy Page, and Penny and Tom Newby, all of Mesa, and Peter Page of Salem, Mass.; ten step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Maureen DeDobbelaere of Elgin, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, his parents, and a step-son, Tim Page.
