Ricardo M. Velando, 68, of LeClaire, Iowa, died Thursday, April 18, 2013, in his residence.
A Celebration of Ric?s Life will be held from 4:30pm - 8pm on Friday, May 17, 2013 at Duck Creek Lodge, Davenport. Doors will open at 4:30 pm and food and beverages will be served immediately until the service at 5:30, which will last about an hour. Memorials may be made to Gilda?s Club Quad Cities. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, assisted the family.
Ricardo Madamba Velando was born May 20, 1944, in Santa Ana, Manila, Philippines, the son of Federico and Aurora (Madamba) Velando. He graduated from Colorado State University with a B.A. in English in 1969, and earned his Masters in Education of hearing impaired from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado, in 1974. He married Elaina M. Allen in December of 1983, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ric worked for the Davenport Community School District as a hearing impaired specialist for 32 years, and then as a substitute teacher for 6 years, retiring in 2013 due to health.
In 1969, Ric spent a year in Salt Lake City, Utah teaching for AmeriCorps VISTA. He began his study of Shudokan Karate while in college, and shortly after earning his black belt, started his own class in the Quad Cities in 1975. In 1998, he switched the focus of the class to Filipino Martial Arts, earning his 5th degree Black Belt in Modern Arnis in 2010. Ric was a member of and performer for the Filipino-American Association of the Quad Cities and the Philippine Dance Troupe of the Quad Cities. His time near the Rocky Mountains of Colorado encouraged an active lifestyle of skiing, biking, running and kayaking.
Ric is survived by his wife, Elaina Allen-Velando of LeClaire, a son, Dominic Velando of Davenport, and siblings, Lourdes (Robert) McGuire of Boulder, Colorado, and their sons, Kevin and Sean, Ernesto (Sheryl) Velando of Sacramento, California, and their daughter, Felicia, and son, Nicholas, Edwardo (Holly) Velando of San Francisco, California, and their daughters, Marci and Wendi, Rodrigo (Jieke) Velando of Thornton, Colorado, Josephina Ono of Pearl City, Hawaii, and their son, Ty, Danielo (Nancy) Velando of Seattle, Washington, and Juan (Dianna) Velando of Golden, Colorado, and their sons, Jonathan and Geoff. He was preceded in death by his parents.
