Burton R. Newell, 74, of Moline, Illinois, died Monday, April 21, 2008, in his winter home in Plant City, Florida.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2008 in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, preceded by a gathering of family and friends beginning at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family for a memorial in his name at Saukie Golf Course.
Mr. Newell was born September 27, 1933, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Clair and Viola (Tiecke) Newell. He married Barbara Kinkead on July 20, 1951, in Moline. He was District Manager for the Quad City Times, retiring in 1992. After retirement, he worked part-time at Saukie Golf Course, Rock Island.
He was an avid golfer, and a huge supporter of local high school golf teams, and especially enjoyed following the success of his granddaughter, Morgan, in golf tournaments.
Burt is survived by his wife, Barbara; three children and their spouses, Christine Scheckler of Monmouth, Illinois, Sheri Lynn and Bob Joseph and Todd and Kathy Newell, all of Moline; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Stan Francque of Moline. He was preceded in death by a son. Michael Newell.
