Phyliss Phillips, 60, of Davenport, Iowa, died Thursday, June 27, 2024, at home. 

Services are 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Third Missionary Baptist Church, 222 W 14th Street, Davenport, with The Rev. Rogers Kirk officiating, immediately followed by a repass at the Friendly House, 1221 N Myrtle Street, Davenport, Iowa, 52804. Cremation will take place prior to services at Trimble Crematory, Moline. 

Phyliss was born on November 21, 1963, in Brownsville, Tennessee, the beloved daughter of Porter and Annie (Williams) Phillips. She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1981 and pursued extensive education, earning her Doctorate of Divinity.

Phyliss led a dynamic and impactful life, leaving an indelible mark on her community and beyond through her various roles and interests:

Work History:

  • Founder and owner of Higher Learning Multi-Cultural Child Care
  • President of the local NAACP chapter
  • Chairperson for the ACLU

Interests: Phyliss was a passionate individual with diverse interests that enriched her life and those around her:

  • Art, particularly pottery and painting, where she found both solace and creativity
  • A love for singing, which she shared joyfully with others
  • In her younger years, she embraced boxing and physical fitness
  • Adept at home remodeling, turning houses into welcoming homes
  • Committed to education, continuously learning and teaching others
  • An advocate for animal rescue, extending her compassion to all creatures
  • A dedicated community advocate, tirelessly working for justice and equality

Phyliss is survived by her loving daughter and her fiancé, Jazzmyn Phillips and Karl Plotzer of Davenport; three beloved siblings, Jasper (Lynn) Williams of Naperville, Illinois, Jereen (Marques Hardin) Phillips-Hardin of Davenport, and Jeffrey Phillips of Rock Island; 10 nieces and nephews; 20 great-nieces and nephews; and dearest friend, Marvin Jackson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Porter and Annie Fay Phillips; along with aunts and uncles, Ora Cooper, Georgia Mae Theriault, Eddie Mae Jarrett, Joyce Ann Reed-Hobson, Roy Williams, and many others.
