Peter Taylor Getz was born July 4, 1938, in Manila, Philippines, the son of Austin Taylor and Loya (Durrell) Getz. He graduated from Ames High School in Ames, Iowa, and proudly served in the U.S. Army, spending 18 months stationed in Germany. On December 9, 1978, he married the love of his life, Louise (Witter) Macomber, in East Moline. He embraced his new family and welcomed two active boys into his life.

After earning his degree from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, Pete began his professional journey as a junior high math and science teacher in Ottumwa and Washington, Iowa. After more than a decade of teaching, he transitioned into a career as a programmer, working for several companies, including Mutual Wheel Company in Moline. Later, he spent 10 years in the IT department at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center before retiring in 2000.

Pete was a dedicated member of Christ United Methodist Church in East Moline, where he played in the bell choir for over 30 years. His love for music extended beyond the church, as he also performed with the “Sentimental Gentlemen” barbershop quartet, and on stage at Playcrafters Barn Theatre and Music Guild.

His greatest joys revolved around his family and the great outdoors. Pete had a passion for skiing, particularly when visiting his son Brian in Colorado, as well as kayaking, bicycling, pickleball, and golfing, with a special fondness for his church golf league. He and his wife, Louise, shared a love for gardening. Pete was also an enthusiastic board game player, always bringing a competitive spirit when playing with family and friends. In addition, he enjoyed crafting, stained glass and cross-stitching.

Pete was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished supporting his children and grandchildren, rarely missing any of their sporting events.

Pete is survived by his beloved wife, Louise; three sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Jamie Getz of Morton, Illinois, Mark and Sheila Macomber of Lanark, Illinois, and Douglas and Libby Macomber of Carmel, Indiana; six grandchildren, Jack and Theodore Getz, Collin Macomber, Lexis (Greg) Webber, and Abby and Mason Macomber; one great-grandson, Brexton Webber, with one on the way; his sister, Margaret Vance of Ames; and several nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Nancy Adams.
