David P. Whitney, 75, of Moline, Illinois, died Monday, June 9, 2008, in Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, Illinois.
Graveside services are Thursday afternoon at Rock Island National Cemetery, with The Reverend Brian Dowd, Grace Bible Missionary Church, East Moline, officiating. Those wishing to attend should meet at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, by 2 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to the Air Force Sergeants Association Scholarship Program, 5211 Auth Road, Suitland, MD 20746.
David Phillip Whitney was born September 12, 1932, in Saratoga Springs, New York, the son of Frederic and Esther (Whitney) Whitney. He served 20 years in the US Air Force, retiring as Staff Sergeant in 1974. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart. He then taught in Coolidge, Alabama, and Las Vegas, Nevada, for 20 years. He earned his Masters Degree in Arts and Education from Northern Arizona University in 1984. He moved to Moline in 1997.
He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, and enjoyed baseball, bowling, and horses. He was 4th in the Bowling Amateur Championship in Texas, and earned both silver and gold medals in the Quad Cities Senior Olympics.
David is survived by a sister, Dorothy Tiethoff of Zephyrhills, Florida, and four nephews and three nieces and their families. He was preceded in death by brothers, George, Paul and Fred Whitney.
