Neil R. "Butch" Powell, Jr., 62, a decorated war hero, of Moline, Illinois, died Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at ManorCare Health Services, Davenport, Iowa.
Graveside services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at Rock Island National Cemetery, where the Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Those wishing to attend should meet at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, at 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Neil Roy Powell, Jr. was born September 10, 1950, in Davenport, the son of Neil Sr. and Phyllis (Normoyle) Powell. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and also the Army Commendation Medal for "valorous actions that contributed immeasurably to saving the life of a fellow soldier."
Most recently, Neil worked at Navistar in Indianapolis, Indiana. Neil was a kind and generous man with a heart as big as the world. He would help anyone in need. He would rather give than receive.
Butch is survived by sons and a daughter-in-law, Daneil Powell of Beech Grove, Indiana, Derrick and Tracey Powell, and their son, Devin, of Greenwood, Indiana, and Brandon Powell of Louisiana; his mother, Phyllis Powell of Moline; and siblings, Patti Witherspoon of East Moline, Pamela and Tom Slead of Moline, Norma McDonald of Rock Island, Gary and Barb Powell of Milan, and Dorothy and Joel Thone of Rochester, New Hampshire; many nieces and nephews; and his good friend, Susan Scully of Eldridge, Iowa.
