Merle Boyce Karn was born May 23, 1931, in Prophetstown, Illinois, the son of Charles and Julia (Covell) Karn. He married the love of his life, Karna Fuller, on February 19, 1955, in Moline, Illinois. Merle served his country with honor, bravely serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
In earlier years, Merle worked as a farmer before venturing into a career at John Deere Planter. His dedication to his work was evident, but it was his kind and loving nature that truly defined him. Merle will be fondly remembered for his act of washing and waxing people's cars for them, showcasing his willingness to help others in any way he could. He had a heart of gold and never hesitated to lend a hand to those in need. It was said that he didn't know a stranger and that not a mean bone existed in his body.
One of Merle's greatest joys in life was his love for animals. He found solace and happiness in their company, and his compassion for all living creatures was truly inspiring. He treasured his family above all else. He was especially devoted to his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Merle is survived by his beloved wife, Karna; three children, Merle "Butch" (Phyllis "Pedie") Karn, Jr. of Atkinson, Illinois, Diana Fossum of Bettendorf, and Michael "Mike" (Dee) Karn of Cambridge, Illinois; along with his 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Merle was preceded in death by his parents; his infant daughter, Patricia Ann Karn; his grandson, Jarrett Fossum; his brothers, Kenneth, Carroll, Donald, and Roland; and his sisters, Lilah, Marian, and Marjorie.
