Melvin Curtis Ford, 91, of Sebring, Fla., passed away on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at The Palms of Sebring. He was a former resident of Rock Island for 80 years.
A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to service time, from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Florida Sheriff?s Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 2000, Boys Ranch, FL 32064-9984 or St. John United Methodist Church, 3214 Grand Prix Drive, Sebring, FL 33872.
Melvin was born to the late Mary and Everett Ford on Dec. 17, 1916, in Silvis. He retired from the Farmall Plant of International Harvester Co. in 1975, after 41 years of employment.
Melvin was a past Master and a member of Trio Lodge No. 57, A.F. & A.M. for 63 years. He was a member of the Valley of Moline Scottish Rite Cathedral. He had been recognized for his volunteer activities in the Aquatic Rehabilitation Program at the Rock Island YMCA.
Melvin resided in Sebring for 10 years. He had been involved in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). He was a member of St. John United Methodist Church in Sebring and was a former member of the First United Methodist Church, Rock Island.
Melvin is survived by his daughters, Marsha Greiner and Susan Ford, Mulberry, Fla.; granddaughter, Elizabeth Kirby (Tom) and grandson, Jordan Kirby, Memphis, Tenn.; brother, Robert Ford (Phyllis), Lenexa, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine. They were married 57 years. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Herbert Greiner; and brothers, Edward, Harold, Paul, William; and sister, Florence.
