Mary L. Woodburn, 96, of Moline, Illinois, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Amber Ridge Assisted Living, Moline
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with The Reverend Jacqueline Perry officiating Burial is in Pleasant Point Cemetery, Port Byron, Illinois. Visitation is one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to the Endowment Fund at Rock Island County Historical Society, 822 11th Avenue, Moline, Illinois 61265, or the Scholarship Fund at Trinity College of Nursing and Health Sciences, 2122 25th Avenue, Rock Island, Illinois 61201, or a charity of your choice.
Mary was born April 6, 1916, in Coe Township, Rock Island County, Illinois, the daughter of James Wallace and Emma Catherine (Schwegler) Woodburn. She graduated from Port Byron High School in 1932, attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College for two years, and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1938, with a bachelor?s degree in Education. She was elected to membership in Kappa Delta Pi.
She was employed at Moline Public Hospital for almost 40 years, serving 30 years as chief accountant and comptroller, then as Acting Administrator in 1977 and as Associate Administrator from 1978 until her retirement in 1986. She was previously employed as an accountant at Rock Island Broadcasting Company (WHBF) for six years. She had also been employed at Young and Rubicam, Chicago, and Ametek. Earlier she taught in a country school and was a mathematics teacher in the Fulton, Illinois, high school.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Moline, the American Association of University Women, Zonta International, Mary Little Deere-Fort Armstrong Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Katherine Butterworth Circle of King?s Daughters, Quad City Alumnae Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha, the Rock Island County Historical Society, and Moline Public Hospital Auxiliary and Retirees.
She especially enjoyed travel, visiting over 30 countries on five continents, most of the states and Canadian provinces, and spending her winters at Ft. Myers Beach, Florida. She also enjoyed reading, bird-watching, and genealogy, and since retirement had been a volunteer at the Rock Island County Historical Society.
Survivors include seven nieces and their spouses, Connie and Roger Curry of Port Byron, Sheila Pettersen of Evanston, Illinois, Susan Thorbrogger and Philip Hardin of Bellevue, Washington, Cathy and Wayne Lotz of Geneseo, Illinois, Colleen Woodburn and John Shultz of Fredericktown, Ohio, Anne Woodburn of St. Paul, Minnesota; and Carol and Roger Strandlund of Moline; six nephews and their spouses, Dr. John and Virginia Butzer of Ada, Michigan, Stanley and Bonnie Woodburn of Port Byron, Dr. Robert Thorbrogger of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Thomas Woodburn of Moline, Mark Woodburn and Lori Ryerkerk of The Netherlands and David and Sarah Woodburn of Winnetka, Illinois. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Mildred Woodburn of Port Byron, and Nancy Woodburn of Moline; 17 great-nieces and -nephews; and seven great-great-nieces and -nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Helen Thorbrogger in 1999 and Jane DeMaranville in 2001, and two brothers, Wallace Woodburn, in 2008 and Samuel Woodburn in 2009.
