Mary L. McWhinney, 87, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Friday, March 21, 2014, at home after an extended illness.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, with The Reverend Tim Snart officiating. Burial is in Western Township Cemetery, Orion, Illinois. Visitation is one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to the church, where she was a member. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, is in charge of arrangements.
The former Mary Lois Lees was born February 1, 1927, in Rural Township, Rock Island County, Illinois, to Lyle and Alice Harsha Lees. She married Ralph McWhinney on September 15, 1946, in Coal Valley. He died June 27, 1982. After their marriage, the couple moved to the farm in Coal Valley, where Mary lived the rest of her life. She was a cook at the former Lutheran Hospital, Moline, and Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley. She enjoyed gardening.
Mary is survived by two sons, Dale McWhinney and Ted McWhinney, both of Coal Valley; a granddaughter, Mary Beth McWhinney of St. Paul, Minnesota; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Ruth Lees of Lynn Center, Illinois; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Lina and Marvin Anderson, Darlene and Richard Anderson, and Robert Martin, all of Coal Valley. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, William McWhinney, and a sister, Ruth Martin.
