Mary Jean Freund, a cherished mother, grandmother and a friend to all who had the joy of knowing her, passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on Sunday, January 19, 2025. Her long beautiful life was testament to love, devotion and the simple joys of connection.
Mary was born on March 29, 1928, the only child to Elizabeth (Wright) Cawiezell and Raymond Cawiezell. Due to being born later in their lives, she was deeply adored from the moment she arrived. As a child, her dimples and resemblance to Shirley Temple led her to become a model for local department stores, perhaps sparking her lifelong passion for fashion.
She attended Immaculate Conception Academy (ICA) and Marycrest College. She met the love of her life, John Freund, and they were married on June 7, 1947, in Davenport. Their son Michael was born in 1948, daughter
Catherine followed 10 months later in 1949. David rounded out the family with his arrival in 1957. Each of which she nurtured with unwavering support, patience and endless love. To Mary family was everything and she made every gathering feel like a celebration.
Mary was like the mother to all the children in the neighborhood, offering comfort for scraped knees, mending torn clothes, and soothing fears. Her home was a haven of love, cookies, and support.
For twelve years, Mary served as the school secretary at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, where she was beloved by the children. She made a point to let them choose the color of the pens they wanted and took care of them when they were sick or waiting to be picked up. Her warm hugs became legendary and remained a hallmark of her kindness throughout her life.
Mary had a gift for bringing people together whether it was over a competitive friendly game of bridge or during a meal at one of her favorite restaurants, The Village Inn. Her presence lit up every room. Her laughter was infectious. Her spirit was unyieldingly positive and her kindness unmatched .She had a way of making everyone feel special as if they were the most important person in the world.Mary’s life was defined by her devotion to those she loved. She was a bright light in a sometimes dark world. An angel who touched every soul with her passion and grace. Her wisdom, humor and warmth left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She taught us the importance of kindness, resilience and cherishing the small joys that make life meaningful.
After retiring, Mary remained an active member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, where she served on the Catholic Service Board. She enjoyed her later years by doing charitable work, playing a little golf, and enjoying many games of bridge.
Throughout her life, starting in childhood, she had a strong devotion to The Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Mary is survived by two of her three children, Catherine (David) Kinsman of Ladue, Missouri, and David (Connie) Freund of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Davenport, Iowa. She is also survived by four grandchildren: David Kinsman, Jr., and Ryan, Tyler, and Alex Freund. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her son, Michael.
Mary was laid to rest beside her husband at the Rock Island Arsenal. A Memorial Mass will be held in the Spring.
