Mary Ann Downing, 87, of Moline, Illinois, died Tuesday, June 12, 2012, in Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa.
Private services and burial are Monday morning at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation for family and friends is 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
The former Mary Ann Nelson was born December 23, 1924, in Smaland, Sweden, the daughter of Arvid G. and Elim Erickson Nelson. She married Donald Grave Downing on November 22, 1945, in Rock Island, Illinois. He died April 14, 1980. She was secretary in the personnel department at John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline, for 12 years, retiring in 1954. She also was secretary at First Christian Church, Moline, where she was a former member. She was a member of Moline Activities Center, and King?s Daughters, and volunteered for Birdies for Charity. She enjoyed crafts and playing Bingo at the Rock Island Lions Club every week.
Mary Ann is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Ronald VanGoethem of Moline; three grandchildren, Jason Anderson and his wife Andrea, Jamie Anderson-Laird, and Katie Anderson; a step-granddaughter, Sheila Flanery and her husband, Tim; three great-grandchildren, Alysia and Whitney Anderson and Allison Laird; three step-great-grandchildren, Daniel Laird and Chase and Brody Flanery, nieces, Karen Collier, Mary Dick, and Merry Ann Gaylord; and a nephew Frank Komatar. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Ronald L. Nelson.
