Martha A. White, 93, a long-time resident of Coal Valley, Illinois, went to meet her Lord and Savior at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline, Illinois, on Tuesday, October 30, 2012.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, with The Reverend Tim Snart officiating. Burial is in Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the church. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, is serving the family.
Martha Adelaide Litchfield was born August 5, 1919, in Norcatur, Kansas, to Rev. Clarence A. and Ora W. Haffner Litchfield. She grew up in Sherrard, Illinois, and graduated from Sherrard High School in 1937. She moved to Coal Valley in 1937, and married Hugh Donald White on January 17, 1942, in Coal Valley.
Martha worked retail at Alden?s catalogue store and J. C. Penney in downtown Moline. She was a waitress at the Quad City Airport before WW II, and worked at the Coal Valley Diner in the 1960?s. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, for 75 years, where she served as Deacon, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the choir and the Women?s circle. She was also an active member and past president of the PTA, as well as a lifetime member of Valley Chapter #274, Order of Eastern Star. After her husband retired in 1974, they were snow birds to Texas for 28 years. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, reading, and word search puzzles.
Martha is survived by her husband of 70 years, Don; three children and their spouses, Bruce and Jodie White of Milan, Illinois, Cheryl and Roberto Alleruzzo of Coal Valley, and Richard and Cindy White of Troy, Illinois; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley J. Harrison of Albany, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Russell, Eugene, and Charles Litchfield.
