Marjorie Ruth Gabbert, 87, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Wednesday, June 11, 2014, in UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, with The Reverend Tim Snart officiating. Burial is in Coal Valley Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church.
The former Marjorie Ruth Finton was born July 18, 1926, in Warsaw, Illinois, to Arch and Jennetta Harrison Finton. She married Harold W. Gabbert on August 25, 1945, in Rock Island. He died February 17, 1989. During WW II, she worked for a defense contractor making ammo boxes and later picked tomatoes for Heinz and worked at the former Corral Motel in Coal Valley. She was an active volunteer for the church and the church's food pantry, spent a lot of time with her grandchildren, and enjoyed gardening.
Ruth is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Terri Gabbert of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, Jimmie and Karen Gabbert of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Steve Gabbert of Port Byron, Illinois; four grandchildren, Lori Gabbert Charney and her husband Jimmy, Mark Gabbert, Angie Schroeder, and Carla Waibel; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Michael Gabbert; two sisters; and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Michael D. Gabbert; a grandson, Michael S. Gabbert; four sisters and four brothers.
