Marilyn J. Flood

November 3, 1927 — January 4, 2019

Marilyn Jean Flood, 91, of Bettendorf, Iowa died Friday January 4, 2019, at Iowa Masonic Nursing Home, Bettendorf.

Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory, Moline, under the direction of Cremation Society of the Quad Cities.

The former Marilyn (Mare) Korn was born on November 3, 1927, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Ottomar and Jane (Dixon) Korn. She attended elementary school in Davenport, Davenport High School and college in Iowa. On June 12, 1959, she married George Flood, who passed away in 1974.
Marilyn spent most of her professional career in Chicago, where she was an executive secretary at Consolidated Freightways until her retirement in 1988. After her retirement, she served as the president of the Yorktown Condominium Association in Lombard, IL before moving to East Moline, IL in the early 1990's.

Mare was a die-hard sports fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Iowa Hawkeyes. She often attended Cubs games with many friends as a member of a group holding season tickets. She frequently talked of one of the most memorable games that occurred at the end of the 1987 season. The Cubs were in last place and losing to the St. Louis Cardinals. In the bottom of the 8th inning, her favorite player, Andre Dawson, came to the plate and belted a home run (one of 47 that year) and the crowd erupted in chants of "MVP! MVP! MVP!". Later in the year, he was named the MLB Most Valuable Player. She recalled birthday celebrations where she ran into NFL Hall of Fame Defensive Tackle Dan Hampton and received an autograph poster of him (and he had to ask his wife how to spell Marilyn). Another birthday she ran into Harry Carey and got a big birthday kiss.

Marilyn is survived by a sister, Barbara Dalton of Sarasota, FL; nieces and nephews Stephanie Cowan of Marietta, Georgia, Jane Dalton of Charlotte, North Carolina, Peter Dalton of Sarasota, Timothy (Nina) Dalton of Manhattan, Kansas, Betsy (Jeff) McNeill of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Megan (Kevin) Welch of Bettendorf, Kristin (John) Flynn of Davenport, Duffy Ryan and Brendan Ryan, both of Los Angeles, California and Patrick, Heidi and Kim Ryan, all of Bettendorf; and many great-nieces and nephews and their families. She especially enjoyed visits with her great-grand niece and great-grand nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband George, a sister, Bette Ryan and her husband Jim, brother-in-law William Dalton and nephew-in-law Robert Cowan.
