Joseph T. Leinfelder, MD, 81, of Moline, Illinois, well-known Ophthalmologist, died Tuesday, November 29, 2011, in Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday, December 5, 2011, in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with The Reverend Jacqueline Perry officiating. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eloise Zeller Leinfelder Nursing Scholarship Fund at the University of Iowa or a favorite charity.
Joseph Tenney Leinfelder was born on November 11, 1930, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Drs. Mary Jane Tenney Leinfelder and Placidus Joseph Leinfelder. He graduated from University High School in Iowa City in 1948. He married Beverly Ann Johnson on August 14, 1953, in Iowa City. In 1954, Joseph received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Iowa. He is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps in the U.S and Korea.
Joseph was employed as an engineer at Honeywell in Minneapolis in 1956. He entered graduate school in electrical engineering at the University of Iowa the following year, and subsequently transferred to the College of Medicine. He graduated with a M.D. in 1963. He is a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa.
Joseph served his medical internship in 1963-4 at Marion County General Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 1967. Joseph joined the ophthalmology practice of Chester Johnson in Moline, Illinois, in 1967. He later founded and was president of Moline Ophthalmology Associates, Ltd. in Moline, Illinois. He was on the staff of Moline Public Hospital, later Trinity Medical Center. He practiced ophthalmology for thirty five years, retiring in 2002. He enjoyed the pleasure of his patients, and the comradeship of fellow physicians and staff.
Joseph was a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Illinois State Medical Society, Quad City Ophthalmology Journal Club, and Trinity Medical Center Journal Club. He was excellent at home repairs, plumbing, electrical and carpentry. He enjoyed yard work, especially cleaning up trees with his chain saw. He was a long-time member of Short Hills Country Club, East Moline.
The Leinfelder family is participating in The Legacy Study of the American Academy of Ophthalmology now in progress. This study is documenting families that have at least three generations of practicing ophthalmologists.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Beverly; two children, Jeffrey Leinfelder, MD, and his wife Susan, of Woodway, Texas, and Ann Camardo and her husband Pat of McChesney Park, Illinois; four grandchildren, Stephen, Megan and Courtney Leinfelder, and Sarah Winger; and his brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Susan Leinfelder of Tucson, Arizona. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Byrnes.
