Melva Mae Wood, 94, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Moline, Illinois, died Wednesday, September 30, 2009, in Mesa Good Shepherd Care Center, Mesa.
A celebration of Melva?s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2009, at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of the East Valley, 1405 East Guadalupe, Tempe, AZ, 85283.
The former Melva Mae Clare was born January 29, 1915, in Boynton, Oklahoma, the daughter of Arthur and Stella Gay Jones Clare. She married Eugene W. Wood on August 18, 1938, in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. He died May 11, 1990, after 52 years of marriage.
She taught elementary school in Port Byron and East Moline for 30 years, retiring in 1976. She and her husband loved to travel and led active lifestyles. She was known for her dry sense of humor, honesty, and dedication to volunteering for many organizations all of her life.
Melva is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Gayle Wood of Waterloo, Iowa; her daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Peter Cook of Jackson Hole, Wyoming; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild with the second due in December.
