Madge L. DeSmet, 82, of Rock Island, Illinois, died Monday, August 9, 2021, at Generations at Rock Island.

Graveside services are 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 16, at Rock Island National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend should meet in the parking lot of Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, at 10:45 a.m. Cremation will take place prior to services at Trimble Crematory under the direction of Trimble Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

The former Madge Lucille Belvel was born January 21, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Marie (Gatrel) Belvel. She married Emil W. “Moe” DeSmet, Jr. on July 23, 1960, in Rock Island. He died January 27, 2020.

She was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island, and enjoyed gardening. Above all else, family was the most important thing to Madge. She loved being with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and having them over to swim.

Madge is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Christie DeSmet of Rock Island; grandchildren, Nicole DeSmet, Shane (Reena) DeSmet, Ashley (Shane) Spradling, and Colton DeSmet, all of Rock Island, and Austin DeSmet of Davenport; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth (Patricia) Belvel, and Gene (Susan) Belvel, both of Bettendorf; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Grell of Dixon, Iowa; and nieces and nephews, Theresa (David) Spicer of Davenport, Nathan Anderson of Dixon, Samantha Sabel of Davenport, Shawn (Christin) Worton of Davenport, Jeffrey Belvel of Geneseo, Jennifer Belvel of Dubuque, Iowa, and Chad (Emily) Belvel of Sigourney, Iowa, and their families. He was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; in-laws, Delores Grell, Evelyn (John), and Frank (Laurel) DeSmet; and a niece, Christine Gaskey.
