Madeline L. Harkey

Madeline L. Harkey, 89, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Saturday, December 26, 2015, in Illini Restorative Care, Silvis, Illinois.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1001 9th Street, Orion, Illinois, with The Reverend Randy Swanson officiating. Burial is in Western Township Cemetery, Orion, Visitation is one hour before the services at the church. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association or the church. Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, is serving the family.

The former Madeline Lois Deem was born October 31, 1926, in Colona, Illinois, to Burl L. and Margaret (Burtis) Deem. She graduated from United Township High School, East Moline, and married Orville J. Harkey on September 14, 1946, in Rock Island, Illinois. He died December 14, 2011. She enjoyed cooking (and was known for her homemade noodles and chicken noodle soup), baking, shopping, playing pinochle, traveling, and collecting red bird plates.

Madeline is survived by three children and their spouses, Linda and David Kunert of Orion, and Gail and Doug LaVinn of Cocoa, Florida, and Carl and Diane Harkey of Naperville, Illinois; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Deanna and Joe Seys, Denise and Michael Jacobsen, Kristy and Jeff Sandberg, Aaron and Alissa Kunert, Michelle Hoogerwerf, Alissa Wiley, Jennifer Harkey, and Jamie Harkey; 17 great-grandchildren; and siblings, John Deem and his wife Patricia Deem of Colona, and Ferne Lindell of Geneseo, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville; a brother and sister-in-law, Burl and Barbara Deem; and a brother-in-law, Dennis Lindell.
