Ellen Miles, 91, of Moline, Illinois, died Friday, May 29, 2009, in Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.
Services are 2:00 p.m. Monday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, with the Reverend Kenneth Harris officiating. Visitation is two hours prior to services. Burial is in Coal Valley Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or one?s favorite charity.
The former Ellen Mary Arthur was born November 29, 1917, in Wales, United Kingdon, Abertridwr, the daughter of Evan and Margaret (Roberts) Arthur. She married James Miles on June 30, 1945, in Tewksbury, England.
Ellen?s first job was in London working as a servers helper, many times having to run for shelter during the many bombing raids of World War II. Later, Ellen moved closer to home where she worked at Curran Co. Ltd. Making bomb shell casings and Welsh Metals Ltd. Near Caerphilly, fabricating airplane parts. After arriving in the United States, she worked at The New York Store, JC Penney, the Rock Island Credit Bureau, and Uptown National Bank in Moline. She retired in 1983.
Ellen is a former member of Bethyl Wesley United Methodist Church, Moline. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and shopping. Her son, Pat, received the Soldier?s Medal of Heroism for coming to the aid of three soldiers and helping save their lives, dying in the process. She was very proud of him!
Ellen is survived by sons and a daughter-in-law, Philip Arthur Miles, and J. Wayne and Karen Miles, all of Coal Valley, a granddaughter, Kelly Miles, and a sister, Gwladys Arthur of Abertridwr. She was preceded in death by a son, William Patrick Miles, six brothers, and four sisters.
