M. Jean Althaus

Jean Althaus, 84, formerly of Moline, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, in Iowa Masonic Nursing Home, Bettendorf, Iowa.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Burial is in National Cemetery on the Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to Quad Cities Alzheimer's Association.

The former Miriam Jean Spaulding was born August 10, 1919, in McGregor, Iowa, the daughter of Edward Leslie and Katherine (Williams) Spaulding. She graduated from Marshalltown, Iowa, High School, and attended Western Illinois Teachers College. She married Robert Andrew Althaus on May 2, 1943, in Palmyra, Missouri. He died May 30, 1999. She had worked at the Rock Island Arsenal and played in the Arsenal Band. She was a member of the Tri-City Motorcycle Club and Turner's Tennis Club, and was an avid skier, biker, and hiker.

Jean is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. David P. and Melanie Althaus of Gallipolis, Ohio; brothers, David Spaulding of Bode, Iowa, and Stanley Spaulding of Chicago; and a nephew, Lawrence Althaus, and his wife Luanna, of Moline. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Dr. James R. Althaus, a brother, Cedric Spaulding, and a sister, Katie Luthe Jurisic.
