Lyle Harmon, 88, of rural Aledo, Illinois, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, in Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.
Services are 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan, with Rev. Robert E. Hagen officiating. Burial is in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Taylor Ridge. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Memorials may be made to the church.
Lyle was born September 24, 1916, in Summum, Illinois, to Harvey and Bertha (Sowers) Harmon. He attended National Youth Association?s vocational school in Mattoon, Illinois, where he played on the school?s baseball team. He served with the U. S. Army in the Pacific Theater during WW II. Lyle married Darlene Harkey on September 15, 1951, in Rock Island. She died September 20, 2004.
He was employed as a precision grinder at Montgomery Elevator Company?s Escalator Plant for 19 years, retiring in 1980. He previously worked for J.I. Case in Rock Island for 16 years, and at the Rock Island Arsenal for two years. He attended St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan. He enjoyed reading, the outdoors, family history, and especially watching his grandchildren play sports.
Lyle is survived by four children and their spouses, Dale and Kelly Harmon of Moline, Amy and Bruce Hunt of Coal Valley, Eileen and Larry Tysma of Hillsdale, and Melanie and David Flickinger of Milan; eight grandchildren, Christopher Thrap Jr., Kyle and Alyssa Harmon, Emily and Jacob Tysma, Wyatt and Lilah Flickinger, and Madeleine Hunt; three step-grandchildren; and one great-grandson, Christopher Thrap III. He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, Colleen Harmon, one brother, two sisters, three half-brothers, and two half-sisters.
