Louis S. "Steve" Reddish, 72, of East Moline, Illinois, died Tuesday, September 25, 2018, in University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Friday at Rock Island National Cemetery. Those attending should meet at Trimble Funeral Home, 701 12th Street, Moline, at 1:45 p.m. to process to the cemetery. Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory. Memorials may be made to Paralyzed Veterans Association or National Wildlife Federation.
Louis Steven Reddish was born July 24, 1946, in Davenport, Iowa, to Louis Frederick and Ruth (Elkins) Reddish. He graduated from Davenport West High School and Memphis State University. He was a Sergeant in the US Air Force serving two tours in the Far East, Taiwan, and Okinawa. After rescuing a woman from drowning in Taiwan, he received the Heroic Deeds Award from the Nationalist Chinese Government and a Silver Medallion from President Chian Kai-shek.
He was injured in a motorcycle accident in 1970 and was permanently confined to a wheelchair. He worked for the Memphis Police Department as an undercover officer and detective from 1969 until 1978, when he changed careers.
Steve received his Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee Graduate School in 1983, and was certified by the Academy of Certified Social Workers in 1985, and by the Tennessed State Board of Social Workers in 1986. He was a social worker for the Memphis VA Hospital for several years before retiring on disability. He received several awards and commendations from the VA including Outstanding Handicapped Employee of the Year Award in 1981.
Steve married Harriet Edwards Hamburg on June 6, 1995, in Memphis. He was a lifetime member of PVA and a Mason. When younger, he was an avid scuba diver and scuba instructor, and later enjoyed bird watching, nature photography, and music especially playing the guitar.
Steve is survived by his wife, Harriet; steps-sons, James Hamburg and his fiancée Shuron Evans of Rock Island and Timothy Hamburg of Bloomington, Illinois; five grandchildren, Tanner, Jacob, and Trevor Hamburg and Eboni and Raymond Evans; a sister, Rudi Megowen of Covington, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews, including Greg and Shawna Stanton and Bret and Micki Stanton. He was preceded by a sister, Joyce Stanton.
