Dorothy M. Gabriel, 92, of East Moline, Illinois, died Thursday, February 16, 2012, in her residence at Park Vista Retirement, East Moline.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley. Visitation is 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. A Prayer Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, followed by a time of sharing for family and friends. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities or Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline.
The former Dorothy Mihalopoulos (Mihal) was born August 26, 1919, in East Moline, the daughter of James and Georgia (Mihos) Mihalopoulos. She married Ernest J. Gabriel on May 7, 1946, in Moline, Illinois. He died August 29, 1996.
Dorothy worked as a dietician for the East Moline State Hospital, retiring in 1980. She was a former member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and the Eagle?s Club, all in Moline. Dorothy and her husband were fantastic ballroom dancers. She enjoyed baking, especially her famous pies, shopping, sewing, and spending time with her family.
Dorothy is survived by daughters and a son-in-law, Darlene and John Katherman of Coal Valley, and Cecelia Johnson of Moline; grandchildren, Christopher and Jennifer Johnson and their daughters, Emilee and Mollee, of Moline, Jennifer Johnson and her children, Jesse, Abigail, and Maggie, of Silvis, Illinois, Andrew and Kristina Katherman and their son, Drew, of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Jeffrey and Kelli Katherman and their sons, Carter and Will, of Waconia, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie, and siblings, Angeline Dallas, Dan Mihal, Katherine Mihal, Gust Mihal, Alyce Dokolas, and Marina Chocas.
