Leona “Nunu” Johnston, 62, of Rock Island, Illinois, died Monday, May 17, 2021, at Centennial Rehab & Healthcare, Moline, Illinois.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. Visitation is one hour prior to services. Burial is in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established in Nunu’s memory.
The former Leona McDuffy was born January 29, 1959, in Louisville, Mississippi, the daughter of Joseph and Catherine “Willie” (Hickman) McDuffy. She married Fletcher Johnston, with whom she remained friends after divorcing. She cherished her time with her special friend, Kearnice “Shorty” Moore.
She enjoyed playing games, dancing and singing. Above all else, family was the most important thing to Nunu.
Leona is survived by brothers, Tyrone Beck and John McDuffy, both of Rock Island; two sisters, Debra McDuffy of Moline, and Ora Brown of Rock Island; a special friend, Kearnice Moore of Rock Island; and a host of nieces and nephews, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bobby and Fred McDuffy; and a nephew, DeShawn Tatum.
