Lena J. Newell, 91, formerly of Moline, Illinois, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012, in Alden Poplar Creek Rehab and Health Care Center, Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
Private burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is in charge of arrangements.
Lena was born June 20, 1920, in Madison, South Carolina, to Clarence Lloyd and Mary Williams Jones. She married Robert E. Newell on August 13, 1944, in Woodruff, South Carolina. He died September 16, 1997. She was a respiratory therapist at Moline Lutheran Hospital and Davenport Mercy Hospital, retiring in 1981. She was a member of Eastern Star, and enjoyed bowling, sewing, crocheting, reading, and crossword puzzles.
Lena is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and James Swaine of Hanover Park, Illinois; a granddaughter and her husband, Kelly and Erik Nelson; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Dellinger of Spartanburg, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband; a granddaughter, Heide Fast; one sister and two brothers.
