Wendell Lee Mesick, 83, of Moline, Illinois, left his earthly body on Friday, March 5th, 2010, while serving dessert to his wife, Wanda. It was a fitting close to a life of service and caring.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church, 1201 13th Street, Moline, with The Reverends Sonia and Julio Alvarado officiating. Burial is in Rose Lawn Memorial Estate, Moline. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Memorials may be made to the church.
Wendell was born at Home in Macomb, Illinois, on January 30, 1927, to Charles and Bessie Cline Mesick. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1944, immediately following his graduation from Macomb High School, and served as a baker on a destroyer escort in the South Pacific.
Wendell used the money he received for his services to purchase a ring for Wanda St. Clair, and they were married on October 12, 1947, in Bushnell, Illinois. Wendell was a union plumber for more than 60 years with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #25. He served as Plumbing Superintendent at Moline Heating and Construction Company from 1960 until he retired in June, 1989.
Wendell served Bethel Wesley United Methodist Church as a dedicated trustee, tenor in the church choir, and pitcher for the church softball team since 1970. He was an avid supporter of Moline High School athletics, bowled in the trade league, attended every Bix Beiderbeck Memorial Jazz Festival since its inception, and enjoyed golf his entire life, finally sinking a hole in one on the 18th hole at Indian Bluff in 2008. He was well known for baking ?grandpa cakes? for family and church events.
Wendell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wanda; two children and their spouses, Dennis and Carolyn Mesick of Coal Valley, Illinois, and Cynthia Diane and Roger Case of Moline; six grandchildren and their spouses or special friends, Kareena LaMar and Loren Long, Edward and Adrienne Mesick, Keith and Amber Case, Melissa Case, Rose Mesick and Andre Johnson, and Sam Mesick and Nikki Sutliff; seven great-grandchildren, Amanda LaMar, Quinten and Kaleb Mesick, Colton Nelles, and Kain, Kadence, and Kyla Case; a brother, Ralph Mesick of Monmouth, Illinois; and sisters, Virginia Hocker of Macomb, and Janice Smith and Jane Ausmus, both of Galena, Illinois. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bradley Mesick, and a sister, Eleanor Mullenburg,
