Major Harold A. "Hal" Noreng, USAF (Ret), 90, of Moline, Illinois, formerly of East Moline, Illinois, and Grand Rapids, Michigan, died Monday, July 4, 2011, in Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2011, at the First Congregational Church of Moline. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bayfield, Wisconsin. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association or First Congregational Church, Moline. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is in charge of arrangements.
Harold Adolph Noreng was born July 8, 1920, on Sand Island in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, the son of Bertrand Konrad and Birgit Nilsdatter Svingen Noreng. He married Rachel Beatrice Williams in 1944, in Houston, Texas. He married Nan Jean Flemming in 1976; she died in 1987. He married Marcia Kay Rutkowski Reed in 1995; she died in 2007. He served his county in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a pilot during WW II, and continued in the U. S. Air Force Reserves, retiring as Major after 35 years. After earning his Bachelor?s degree in business from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, he worked in management at Sears & Roebuck for many years, ending his career as Administrator of English Hills Nursing Home, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Hal was a humble, kind hearted man who loved people. His twinkling eyes and sweet smile won many friends. Leadership came naturally to him. He was a life-member of American Legion Post #69 in Whitehall, Michigan, Commander of the Grand Rapids Power and Sailing Squadron, an officer in Kiwanis International and Elks Lodge, and a member of the Air Force Association. He was active in his church wherever he lived, most recently attending First Congregational Church in Moline. Hal passed on his love of music, dance, travel, golf, fishing, hunting, and gardening to his children and grandchildren.
Hal is survived by four children and their spouses, Hildegard Ruth "Cindy" and Fred Johnson of Springfield, Missouri; Linda Marie and Donald C. Shearer of East Moline, Illinois; Bruce William Noreng of Chicago; and Mark Harold Noreng of Sunnyvale, California. Also two grandchildren, Paul Douglas Miller of Prairie Village, Kansas; and Melinda Margaret Trusty and her husband Tarrence of Marion, Indiana; and three great-grandchildren, Kourtney Bree, Ariston Levi, and Sophie Alyeah Trusty. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Wiseth and Signe Olsen, and two brothers, William and Norman Noreng.
