The former Judith Gail Laxton was born October 5, 1946, in Paducah, Kentucky, the daughter of Everett and Dorothy (Foster) Laxton. She married her high school sweetheart, Steven A. Miller on October 16, 1965, in Coal Valley. She completed the nursing program at Barnes Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri and passed the boards to become a registered Professional Nurse in the fall of 1967.

While serving in the U.S. Army, Steve was stationed at Ft. Dix, the couple lived in Mt. Holly, New Jersey, where Judy was employed at Burlington County Memorial Hospital. After Steve completed his military service, they moved back to Illinois, where Judy obtained full-time employment as a Critical Care Nurse in the Coronary Care Unity at Illini Hospital in Silvis.

Judy was hired in January of 1970 by Black Hawk Junior College to start and teach in a Practical Nursing Program. She completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Marycrest College in 1982. She taught at BHC full-time for 32-years, retiring in May 2002, at which time she received the honor of Professor Emeritus.

She was active in the American Heart Association as a CPR instructor, and the American Red Cross, serving as a site supervisor at several community clinics. She was a life-member of the American Federation of Teachers, serving on the membership committee in 1979-1980, and a member of the American Nurses Association, serving as membership chairman from 1972-1974. She was also the Parish Nurse for St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orion for five years.

Judy loved spending time with her grandson. He was the light of her life. She also liked traveling, visiting historical sites, and was an active member of the Speedway Club. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed knitting and crafts.

Judy is survived by her loving husband of over 50 years, Steve; a son and daughter-in-law, Brett and Valerie Miller, and their son, Brody, all of Charlotte; and a brother, Phillip Laxton of Coal Valley. She was preceded in death by her parents.
