John R. “Jack” Turkal, 80, of Rapids City, Illinois, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2024, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Bettendorf, Bettendorf, Iowa.
Graveside services are 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 10, at Coal Valley Cemetery, immediately followed by a luncheon at First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley. Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, is entrusted with arrangements.
John Robert Turkal was born May 18, 1944, in Waterloo, Iowa to Carl and Edna (Townsend) Turkal. He attended Moline High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1961.
He married Dawn L. DeShane on February 5, 1966, in Coal Valley, Illinois. She passed away November 1, 2024. He retired from John Deere Davenport Works after 30 years.
Jack liked spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed drag racing, golf, bowling, watching TV, and was a member at the First Presbyterian Church of Coal Valley.
He is survived by his four children, Lynn (Greg) Steffen of Land O’ Lakes, Florida, Robert (Leona) Turkal of Walcott, Iowa, Thomas (Mary) Turkal of Tucson, Arizona, and Kari (Gary) Barrett of Knoxville, Tennessee; and three grandsons, James (Kara) Turkal of Rapids City, Robert Hall of Tucson, and Rudy Turkal of Tucson; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, and three brothers, Ed and Don Turkal and Rudy Sebelien.
