John R. Gingry

September 3, 1943 — July 4, 2018

John R. Gingry, 74, of East Moline, Illinois, died Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at ManorCare Health Services, Davenport, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services are 10:00 a.m. Monday at Rock Island National Cemetery, with The Rev. Len Astrowski officiating. Those wishing to attend should meet at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, at 9:45 a.m. The Vietnam Veterans of America Quad Cities Chapter #299 will present military honors. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Davenport Chapter.

John was born September 3, 1943, in Hannibal, Missouri, the son of Cleo and Elizabeth (Atkins) Gingry. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He married Alice Brereton, and the couple had three children before separating. John moved to Des Moines, where he worked as an accountant for Pinnacle Insurance Company. He moved back to the Quad Cities around 1997, and reconnected with his son, Chris, and his family, about ten years later.

He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, and talking politics. He was very proud of his military service and was known as the "flag man" at his apartment complex, as he always made sure there was a flag flying. He was a very generous man to those he believed in.

John is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Brenda Gingry of Rock Island; two daughters, Christy and Jennifer; grandchildren, Andrew (Tabitha) Kasten of Rock Island, Cyndi (Ron) Reveal of Rock Island, Beth (Jason) Boedeker of LeClaire, Iowa, Luke (Marcella) Sherman of Silvis, and Josh (Megan Kruger) Handelman, Shawn Gingry, and Donnie Gingry, all of Rock Island; many great-grandchildren including Colton and Patrick Kasten; siblings, Mary (Carl) McGee of Rapids City, Illinois, Terry (Cheryl) Gingry of Indiana, and Collette (Rob) Lilly of Silvis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
