John Carlyle Race, Sr., 82, of Silvis, Illinois, died Tuesday, January 3, 2006, in Parkview Terrace Health Care Center, East Moline.
Services are 1 p.m. Friday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is one hour before the service. Memorials may be made to St. Jude?s Children?s Hospitals.
Mr. Race was born February 26, 1923, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Earl and Elsie (Lambert) Race. He married Noreen Bowling, and they were later divorced. He married Carol Fosler, who preceded him in death. He married Helen Blunt Hufford on April 15, 1988, in Keokuk, Iowa.
He was custodian for Colchester High School, Colchester, Illinois, for 17 years, retiring in 1988. He previously worked in the dairy business, first as a milkman for Peerless Dairy and later branch manager for Sanitary and Sealtest Dairies in Rockford and Macomb. He belonged to the Eagles Club in Macomb.
John is survived by his wife, Helen; three children, Millie Johnson-Crawford and her husband
Homer Crawford of Byron, Illinois, Karen Race Bowman and her husband Lamarr of Marshall, Virginia, and Col. John C. Race Jr., US Army (Ret) and his wife Ann of Seaford, Virginia; step-children, Richard Hufford of Danbury, Wisconsin, Debbie and Jim Durham and Wendy and Wendell Thompson, all of Loves Park, Illinois, and Cathy Eissens of Roscoe, Illinois; two grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and 12 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a step-son, Verle Wayne Hufford, a step-grandson, and a step-great-grandchild.
