Joann S. Hanson

November 30, 1933 — April 15, 2016

Joann Slager was born November 30, 1933, at a farmstead near Williamsburg, Iowa, the first child of Truman and Rena (Edwards) Slager. She passed to God's care on April 15, 2016, at Hope Hospice of Bonita Springs, Florida.

]oann graduated from City High School of Iowa City, Iowa, where she was a cheerleader and an accomplished clarinetist in the school band.

She finished her BA in education at the University of Iowa, where she was a proud marching bagpiper of the Iowa Scottish Highianders, and a Life Loyal member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Joann met her husband of 58 years, James C. Hanson, at The University of Iowa, and following graduation, the couple established their home at Moline, Illinois. There she taught third grade students for several years, raised her children, Mark and John, and was then selected for Moline's Bedside Tutoring program, where she tutored ill and injured children for twelve years. She was past president of the Junior Symphony Board of the Quad Cities; former Secretary of the Junior Service League of Moline; a long time member of PEO chapter HE, and Carol Guild of First Congregational Church of Moline.

She served The University of Iowa as a board member of the Iowa Alumni Association, and, with her husband, by establishing scholarship funds and support for numerous other programs of the UI Foundation. She is a member of UI Foundation President's Club and UIAA Old Capitol Club. She was honored by the University of towa Alumni Association with the Distinguished Alumni Award for Service, 2003.

Joann is survived by her husband James C. Hanson, Bonita Springs; son Mark E. Hanson, Olympia WA; sister Carolyn Klein, Denver GO; brother Gary T. Slager, Iowa City IA; and three grandchildren Christoper, Kathleen, and Patrick Hanson. She was predeceased by son John C. Hanson.

Funeral services for ]oann are 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26, at First Congregational Church of Moline, with interment at Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to The Moline Foundation, Hanson Scholarship Fund, 817 11th Avenue, Motine IL 61265 or to Hope Hospice, 27200 Imperial Parkway, Bonita Springs FL 34135.
