James Aloian, 84, of Canton, Illinois, formerly of Davenport, Iowa, died Saturday, January 15, 2011, in Heartland Health Care Center, Canton, Illinois.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation is one hour before the services.
Jim was born January 1, 1927, in Laramie, Wyoming, the son of Sam and Sarah Sarkisian Aloian. He graduated from Arizona State University and proudly served in the U. S. Navy during WW II. While in the Navy he was a middleweight boxing champion. He was self-employed in various occupations, most recently owning Jim’s Card Shop in Canton. He was an avid sports fan, loved the Cubs and the Bears, and at one time was the owner-manager of the Canton Centaurs semi-pro football team. After college, he was recruited by both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Jim is survived by five children and their spouses, Sandra and Dave Savill of Seattle, Washington, Samuel Aloian of St. David, Illinois, Andy and Kelly Aloian of Davenport, Iowa, Mike and Laura Aloian of Davenport, and Susan and Ed Klapp of Galesburg, Illinois; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James Robert Aloian, a granddaughter, Sara Savill, one brother, and one sister.
