James John Srail was born on February 21, 1911, in Cleveland, Ohio, to James and Anna Kozelka Srail. He attended Western Reserve University for his undergraduate and graduate degrees, and in June 1936, earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. James then completed a one year internship at Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio, and he then served as a resident physician at the Macon County TB Sanatorium in Decatur, Illinois, for a year. In 1939, James began a one year residency at Moline Public Hospital, and he would spend the remainder of his life living in the Quad Cities area. In 1940, he began three years of employment at the practice of Oscar Dailey M.D. in Port Byron, Illinois. James moved to Moline in 1943 and opened his own practice in the Fifth Avenue Building as a General Practitioner, and he would go on to see patients there for the next 37 years. Additionally, James worked as a part time physician for the John Deere Medical Department from 1947 to 1973. He retired from the practice of medicine in 1980 at the age of 69.
James practiced medicine the old fashioned way...by putting his patients first. In the days before urgent care clinics, he made house calls throughout his career and frequently had patients stop by his house for after hours care. James delivered hundreds of babies during his working life, and in many instances delivered two generations of babies in the same family.
James married Bernice Cronk Belden on August 3, 1947, at Christ Episcopal Church in Moline, and they had two children: Susan and James. James was an avid golfer, bowler and card player, and he was a member of Christ Church for almost 64 years and served on the Church Vestry several times.
He was a Life Member and Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, an Emeritus member of the Illinois State Medical Society and a member of the Society?s 50 Year Club. He was a member of the Rock Island County Medical Society, Retired Physicians Club, John Deere Retirees Club, Philo Lodge #436, AF & AM, Port Byron for 52 years; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Moline, Rock Island County Humane Society, and Senior Citizen?s Bowling team.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Bernice, of Moline; son, James, daughter in law, Deanna, and grandchildren, Katherine, Julie and Ryan, all of Johnston, Iowa. He was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Charles Roberts, and brothers, George and Edward Srail.
