Hugh Barrett, 92, of Silvis, Illinois, died of congestive heart failure on Nov. 20, 2015 after a short illness.
Cremation will take place at Trimble Crematory under the direction of Cremation Society of the Quad Cities. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015 at the Unitarian Church of Davenport. In lieu of flowers, memorials may bemade to the church.
He was born in East Chicago, Indiana, on March 10, 1923 to Newton Elliott Barrett and Alma Beck Barrett. He grew up as a Methodist minister's son in several cities in Missouri. He performed alternative service honorably during World War II, where he met and married Bertha Smith Whitson. As a Methodist minister, he served in several churches, where his four sons were born.
In 1955, Hugh began work as a Psychiatric Aide at East Moline State Hospital. In the early 1970's Hugh went to the Nursing School of Black Hawk College, and became a Registered Nurse. When East Moline State Hospital closed, Hugh and Bertha moved to Chester, IL to work as nurses at the state prison.
After retirement, Hugh and Bertha enjoyed travel, historical reenactments, and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. After Bertha's death in 2010, Hugh moved to the Lighthouse in Silvis where he made many good friends. In the Fall of 2015, Hugh suffered a heart attack which led to his death.
Hugh is survived by sons Jay Elliott (Karen), Daniel Thomas (Patricia), Franklin Newton (Mary), daughter-in-law Connie Barrett, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and special friend Jayne DePaepe. Preceded in death by wife Bertha and son Hugh David. The family would like to thank Hospice and the staff at the Lighthouse for their care and support.
