Neal F. Payden, 91, of Moline, Illinois, a decorated WW II Veteran, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011, in his residence.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at First Congregational Church, Moline, with The Reverend Allen Mothershed officiating. Burial is in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to the church or a favorite charity. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is in charge of arrangements.
Neal Franklin Payden was born April 3, 1920, in Moline, and was raised by his mother and step-father, Jennie Wahlstrom Payden and Charles Seams. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS in Engineering in 1946. He married Anna Blanche Stoelting on November 12, 1944, in Moline. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a Navigator during WW II, and among other medals was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 4 bronze oak leaf clusters, and the European Theater Ribbon with four battle stars. He was a civil engineer at Western Structural Company, Moline for 27 years, retiring in 1989, and previously worked at Beling Engineering.
He was a long-time member of First Congregational Church, Moline, where had served on the Board of Trustees, and was a member of the 390th Bomb Group Veterans Association.
Neal is survived by his wife, Anna; five children and their spouses, Deborah Tyler of Lake Isabella, California, Betty and Rich Herzfeldt of Moline, Revs. Thomas and Deborah Payden of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, William and Lisa Payden of Moline, and Jennifer and Michael Geske of Crystal Lake, Illinois; 11 grandchildren and spouses, Tammy Tyler, Katie and Greg Ferguson, Tom Herzfeldt, Jean and Justin Watts, Anna Payden, Rachel Payden, Richard Payden, Brian Payden, Nicholas Geske, Zachary Geske, and Benjamin Geske; three great-grandchildren, Karlie and Harper Ferguson and Oliver Watts; a brother and sister-in-law, Duane and Betty Seams of Rogersville, Tennessee; and a sister, Marilyn Seams of White Bear Lake, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard, in infancy, and a brother, Kenny Seams.
