Herbert Junkin, 76, of Alpha, Illinois, long-time resident of Coal Valley, died Thursday, May 25, 2006, in his residence, after an eight-month battle with lung cancer.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Burial is in National Cemetery on the Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to the family for medical expenses.
Herbert was born August 18, 1929, in Gordo, Alabama, the son of Claude and Eula (Hannah) Junkin, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Mary Brown Wolfe on September 12, 1958, in Galesburg. He moved to Coal Valley in 1958 and lived there until moving to Crescent Lake in Alpha in 2002. He was a baker for Eagle Foods for 35 years, retiring as foreman in 1991. He enjoyed fishing and building houses, and loved his dog, Simba, and spending time with his grandchildren and family.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Mary; seven children and their spouses, TrudyAnn and Leonard Litty of Moline, Richard and Sandy Roenfeldt of Ottawa, Illinois, Daniel and Mary Wolfe of San Jose, California, Donald and Mary Wolfe of Coal Valley, Tressa and Dennis Clemons of Des Moines, Ranae Wilson of Bettendorf, and Amy and Richard Launius of Coal Valley; 22 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, two sisters and one brother.
The family thanks everyone involved with Pathway Hospice and Henry County Home Care, and the doctors at the VA Hospital in Iowa City.
