Helen E. Simmons, 95, of Rock Island, Illinois, died Thursday, September 1, 2022, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa.
Services are 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, with The Rev. Becky David officiating. Private burial is in Healy Cemetery, Cedar County, Iowa. Memorials may be made to First Congregational Church, Moline.
The former Helen Elnora Maurer was born July 16, 1927, in West Liberty, Iowa, the daughter of Albert Edward and Mabel Irene (Healy) Maurer. She married George B. Simmons on June 16, 1967.
She began teaching in a school near Muscatine, Iowa, at age 17 and taught for four years. In 1948, she began working at J.I. Case in Davenport in salary and payroll for 13 ½ years. She then worked 5 ½ years in payroll at John Deere Parts Depot. In 1980, she worked at Moline Public Hospital for a short time, and then at the Rock Island Arsenal for 8 ½ years.
Helen was longtime member of First Congregational Church, Moline, where she served on the Floral-Service Guild. She was also active in the Moline Literacy Guild, Mary S. Huntoon Circle of King’s Daughters, Chapter HB of P.E.O. Sisterhood, and the Mary Little Deere Chapter of DAR. She volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital in Davenport, Moline Public Hospital, and the Bettendorf Library. She enjoyed golfing.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Leota Aronson.
